Systemic and Regional Haemodynamics in Experimental Renal Hypertension in Conscious Rabbits

Abstract: 1. The radioactive microsphere method was used to measure the distribution of cardiac output, regional flows and resistances in conscious normotensive and hypertensive rabbits implanted with an electromagnetic flow probe on the ascending aorta or pulmonary artery. Hypertension was induced by wrapping one kidney with cellophane and removing the other, and studies were performed about 5 weeks later. 2. Heart rate, stroke volume, cardiac output and total renal mass were reduced in the hypertensive animals, while … Show more

“…Our data also represent the first evidence that substantial TAs remodeling occurs in the liver, intestine, and bronchi, which are not considered typical targets in hypertension[5],[51]. TRR correlated significantly with data obtained by physiological measures: in the Goldblatt model increased RVR has been shown in every organ, and is most pronounced in kidneys[84],[85],[86],[87]. In normal rats TC correlated with the regional BFR ( Fig 7 ).…”

“…In normal rats TC correlated with the regional BFR ( Fig 7 ). However, it was difficult to compare our results with pathophysiological studies because the renal BFR in hypertensive animals has been shown as decreased, increased, or stable as well[84],[88],[89]. Evidently, hemodynamic correlations of TRR, TC and TMV need further investigation.…”

“…Recent studies in our laboratory have shown t h a t hypertension induced by unil ateral cellophane wrapping of one kidney with contra1 ateral nephrectomy in rabbits was characterized by a rather uniform increase in regional vascular resistances except for some splanchnic organs ( 4 ) . The enormous increase in t o t a l peripheral resistance after unilateral cellophane wrapping was accompanied by a decrease i n heart rate and stroke volume, resulting in a large reduction ( > 35%) in cardiac o u t p u t (4,15).…”

“…1976). Arterial resistance is increased approximately two-fold rather uniformly in most vascular beds, apart from parts of the splanchnic circulation and fat, where there is little or no change (Boom & Saxena 1980). Chronic inhibition of angiotensin converting enzyme attenuates perinephritis hypertension in rabbits by approximately 50%.…”
