Systemic chemotherapy and tamoxifen induced regression of choroidal metastasis from a breast carcinoma in a male

Abstract: We report a case of a 55-year-old male patient with breast carcinoma, who developed choroidal metastasis. The patient had undergone mastectomy for carcinoma of right breast, five years ago. The patient was advised close follow-up for the left eye, as he was already on tamoxifen therapy (started a month ago) for spinal metastasis. On last follow-up, a year later, the choroidal lesion had completely scarred, with no recurrences. Systemic hormonal therapy like tamoxifen given for the breast primary and other syst… Show more

“…Overall, we concur with earlier reports of a conservative approach for choroidal metastatic lesions in disseminated breast carcinoma while on chemotherapy [ 9 11 , 28 , 29 ], Additionally, we suggest the consideration of vinorelbine therapy in patients with choroidal metastasis, irrespective of hormone receptor status and responsiveness to antiestrogen therapy in disseminated breast malignancy, thereby limiting local radiation therapy to vision threatening lesions only.…”

“…[ 39 ] Regression of choroidal metastasis from breast and lung carcinoma after systemic chemotherapy has been noted. [ 40 41 42 43 ] In a study of 4 patients with choroidal metastasis treated with systemic chemotherapy alone, tumor regression occurred in 3 patients. [ 44 ]…”

“…A higher concentration of estrogen and progesterone receptors in male breast cancer may make it more susceptible to hormonal treatment. Regression of choroidal metastases in male breast cancer has been reported with systemic chemotherapy (18), as well as with hormonal therapy alone (11,19). If choroidal metastases are unresponsive to systemic therapy, as in all cases reported here, radiotherapy is the treatment of choice for palliation of ocular symptoms.…”
