Systemic Functional Linguistics and Computation

Abstract: Systemic-functional linguistics (SFL) has a long history of interaction with computational linguistics, but no area stands still. In the 1980s and early 1990s, various computational systems for natural language generation informed by SFL achieved state-of-the-art performance. Subsequently, however, advances in statistically driven, rather than rule-based, computational linguistics eclipsed many of these earlier systems. In this contribution, we focus on several areas of contemporary computational applications … Show more

“…Other researchers are also using SFL to address the organization of informational content in culturally related practices and communications (e.g., Christina & Shasita, 2022;Ismail & Kardina, 2021;Nugraha, 2020;Nugraha & Mbato, 2022). In contrast, some researchers were looking into the organization of themes in articles that are published in the mass media and literary works (e.g., Bateman et al, 2019;Caffarel-Cayron & Rechniewski, 2014;Faradika, 2019;Skorokhod, 2016). Concerning this study, it is important to point out that comparison analyses have been done between the various research that were mentioned earlier in this paragraph.…”

“…Corpus-based studies on current digital DVs in general and particularly those focusing on single graphical elements are still rare. Possible reasons for that may be the low availability of ready-to-use corpora and that the methods for accurately and time-effectively analyse such material are still at beginning stages [13][14][15].…”

“…Is it possible to profile each newspaper and their texts according to the presence (or absence) of such choices? Bateman et al (2019) conduct an extensive review of the many software-driven studies in the scope of SFL. According to the authors, there has been a long tradition in computational research, especially in the use of annotated corpora.…”
