Systemic Lupus Erythematosus: An Overview of the Disease Pathology and Its Management

Abstract: Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a chronic autoimmune disease with varied natural history and multisystemic involvement. The pathogenesis is multifactorial and complex precipitating the formation of autoantibodies. One of the main factors in SLE is the interaction between environmental triggers and genetic factors. Genome-wide association study technology has led to the identification of more than 80 loci which produce key proteins that lead to small pathophysiological changes and are associated with SLE.… Show more

“…The impact of the disease on the everyday life of patients is significant. Nevertheless, in general, we may state that thanks to an efficient therapy and sufficiently timely diagnostics the prognosis of patients with SLE [21] has lately improved and the impact of the disease on a patient has been mitigated. SLE is a chronic, progressive disease that leads to irreversible organ changes when activity persists.…”

“…Impaired DNA repair may induce an autoimmune response in susceptible individuals. DNA damage can be produced by endogenous factors involving reactive oxygen species, or indirectly during base excision repair (BER) pathway for DNA damage, or exogenous factors as chemicals, ionizing radiation, and ultraviolet (UV) irradiation [9].…”

“…The systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a heterogeneous chronic autoimmune disease known as a multisystem inflammatory disease. 1,2 SLE is characterized by dysregulation in the innate and adaptive immune system and high-level production of autoantibodies. 3 The patients with SLE may represent various clinical features ranging from skin manifestations to lifethreatening renal involvement.…”
