Systemic Steroid Application Caused Sudden Death of a Patient with Sudden Deafness

Abstract: A 63-year-old man, who was diagnosed with sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSHL), showed severe hypertension 10 hours after prednisolone administration. Subsequently, the patient suddenly died due to pulmonary edema. The autopsy indicated a pheochromocytoma in the right adrenal gland, and the cause of death was determined to be a pheochromocytoma crisis induced by systemic administration of prednisolone. Pheochromocytoma crisis is a life-threatening condition and can result from the use of corticosteroids. P… Show more

“…A 63‐year‐old male patient with diabetes and hypertension who developed sensorineural hearing loss was treated with intravenous prednisolone. Marked hypertension and tachycardia developed within 10 h and fatal cardiac arrest occurred . Retrospectively, an adrenal tumour was present on previous imaging.…”

“…One patient also received metoclopramide, a well‐known precipitant of CC through its actions on the dopamine (D2) receptor leading to increased catecholamine release and significant vasopressor effects . In this case, metoclopramide was prescribed for nausea, well after symptom onset, This may have contributed to the severity of the CC which resulted in a fatal cardiopulmonary arrest. In two other cases of CC, other drugs were involved within the setting of chemotherapy for non‐Hodgkin's lymphoma.…”
