Systems Research in Education: Designs and methods

Abstract: This exploratory paper seeks to shed light on the methodological challenges of education systems research. There is growing consensus that interventions to improve learning outcomes must be designed and studied as part of a broader system of education, and that learning outcomes are affected by a complex web of dynamics involving different inputs, actors, processes and socio-political contexts. How should researchers in comparative and international education respond to this call for complexity? To begin to an… Show more

“…Therefore, studying individuals and their interaction requires a research approach that allows participants to openly share their insights. The qualitative design aims to identify ways through which (relationships between) individuals operate by collating and analysing rich data to infer meaning (Magrath et al, 2019), aiming for in-depth explorations of issues in real-life settings in which the researcher has little control (Crowe et al, 2011). The primary instrument is the interview, to try and uncover individuals' private, sometimes incommunicable, social worlds through establishing a conversation with sharing stories and experiences (Edwards and Holland, 2013).…”

“…Therefore, this study has a qualitative design. Qualitative research often aims to identify ways through which relationships between individuals operate and does so by collating and analysing rich data to infer meaning and explore the mechanisms behind relationships (Magrath, Aslam, and Johnson 2019). More specifically, this study can be depicted as a case study that involves participants from two similar education institutions.…”
