Systems toxicology assessment revealed the impact of graphene‐based materials on cell cycle regulators

Abstract: Understanding the cellular and molecular toxicity of graphene and its derivatives is essential for their biomedical applications. Herein, gene expression profile of graphene-exposed cells was retrieved from the Gene expression omnibus database.Differentially expressed genes and their functional roles were then investigated through the pathway, protein-protein interaction (PPI) network, and module analysis.High degree (hub) and high betweenness centrality (bottleneck) nodes were subsequently identified. The fun… Show more

“…In our ongoing program, aimed to the discovery of new G-based drug delivery systems [ 14 , 15 , 16 ], we expand the aims of our work focusing our attention on the modulation of gene expression induced by G-cell interaction. Differently from other nanomaterials, such as silica nanoparticles [ 17 ], the impact of G exposure in gene expression is a concern largely unexplored, till now [ 18 , 19 , 20 , 21 ].…”

“…[ 14,20–28 ] For example, toxicity in proliferating cells and induction of autophagy have been associated to specific types of graphene structures. [ 29–31 ] In contrast, other authors describe a beneficial role for graphene in wound healing [ 13,32–34 ] and in anti‐inflammatory responses, including cardiac repair, microglial function improvement, colitis prevention and NLRP3 inflammasome negative regulation. [ 15,35–37 ] In addition to the different cell types in which graphene function has been studied, it should be mentioned the bias created by cell lines versus the corresponding physiological counterparts.…”
