Abstract: Streptomycetes are saprophytic bacteria that grow on complex polysaccharides, such as cellulose, starch, chitin and chitosan. For the monomeric building blocks glucose, maltose and N-acetylglucosamine (GlcNAc), the metabolic pathways are well documented, but that of glucosamine (GlcN) is largely unknown.
