Tacit Knowledge in Painting: From Studio to Classroom

Abstract: This article discusses research that employed practice‐led and action research methods to study the tacit knowledge of painting practice and its application to teaching. Polanyi’s theory of tacit knowledge is used to analyse the non‐verbal, experience‐based knowledge of painting to construct a discursive relationship between the dual practices of painting and teaching. The research was undertaken in the context of a twelve‐week class in landscape painting for adults in a non‐profit art school. Within the conte… Show more

“…Marinkovic, B used the method of practice research and action research to construct a dual practice relationship between Chinese painting and teaching. The method integrates the expression of visual perception, material action and thinking by analyzing the focus as well as the auxiliary knowledge that emerges during the painting process and constructing a dynamic multidimensional model of thinking [15]. Castilla uses some semiotics of Chinese paintings for pictorial analysis, and the method turns each color element into a tool for communication.…”

“…Some scholars have adopted practice and action research methods to study the application of tacit knowledge of art practice in teaching to construct a discursive relationship between the dual practices of art design and teaching. By analyzing several modes of action and thinking, art design is described as a dynamic multimodal thinking process that integrates expressions of visual perception, material action, and thinking [10]. Other researchers have identified the challenges students and teachers need to face in an EMI environment through a research project in art and design.…”

“…In fact, artists have long been using the arts to convey their own emotional, cognitive and kinesthetic commentaries on life experiences. For example, Marinkovic (2021) describes painting as a "…dynamic multimodal thinking process, integrating visual perception, material actions and expressive ways of thinking" (p. 389).…”
