TagPies: Comparative Visualization of Textual Data

Abstract: is a novel tag cloud layout that arranges the tags belonging to multiple data categories in a pie chart manner. Motivated from research in classical philology, TagPies were designed to support the comparative analysis of classical terminology. In this scenario, the data categories represent the co-occurrences of different searched keywords, so that the comparison of the contexts in which these keywords were used becomes possible using TagPies. This paper illustrates the iterative development of TagPies, which … Show more

“…Another word cloud based visualization TagPies (Jänicke et al, 2018) visualizes keywords and their co-occurrences in a radial layout. While not explicitly mentioned, this interface could be used to visualize the comparative co-occurrences of the same keyword per position by having a separate slice of the pie for each word position (PO).…”

“…What are the topics central to the reporting of the three most popular fake news websites Philosophia Perennis, Compact Magazin and Journalisten Watch? After crawling respective articles, RStudio 4 was used for data processing purposes like tokenization and word frequency counting. Next to German stopwords, the students blacklisted words that systematically occured in each article of a provider.…”

“…Next to German stopwords, the students blacklisted words that systematically occured in each article of a provider. For visualization purposes, students used TagPies [4] to support comparatively analyzing frequently used words (see Figure 5). The students used the visualization and summarized their results as follows.…”

“…In addition to this relatively common word-cloud layout, there have been a number of other layout approaches, including layouts for even less white-space [12,19], the ManiWordle approach [13], rolled-out word-clouds [21], or TagPies [10]. As will be described below, due to our focus on layout stability, we will use a very simple spiral-based layout algorithm.…”
