Tailored Immersion: Implementing Personalized Components Into Virtual Reality for Veterans With Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder

Abstract: Introduction With the application of virtual reality (VR), tailored interventions can be created that mirror the traumatic experiences of veterans with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Visual elements can be mimicked, and auditory and other senses stimulated. In doing so, the degree of immersion can be adjusted to optimize the therapeutic process. Objectively measuring the sensory immersion is key to keep subjects within their personal window of tolerance. Based on this information the therapist can… Show more

“…Physically moving forward during exposure to emotional memories may open the door to new learning and memory reconsolidation leading to mental shifts around themes of guilt, shame, and self-blame [ 31 ]. This movement during therapy, combined with a reduction in the ability for the participant to cognitively avoid traumatic stimuli, may enhance divergent thinking abilities by stimulating hippocampal activity and allowing the patient to change patterns of problematic thinking and reduce cognitive rigidity [ 31 ]. Several peer-reviewed articles further describe the 3MDR intervention and speak to these factors [ 24 , 32 ].…”
