Tailored long range forces on polarizable particles by collective scattering of broadband radiation

Abstract: Collective coherent light scattering by polarizable particles creates surprisingly strong, long range inter-particle forces originating from interference of the light scattered by different particles. While for monochromatic laser beams this interaction decays with the inverse distance, we show here that in general the effective interaction range and geometry can be controlled by the illumination bandwidth and geometry. As generic example we study the modifications inter-particle forces within a 1D chain of at… Show more

“…The quite pronounced exponential decay of the couplings with distance can be achieved by allowing each mode to have a certain (Lorentzian) bandwidth within the interval of allowed propagation constants as opposed to only one discrete contribution. The bandwidths are chosen in such a way that there is an overlap between the modes of a few percent [21].…”

“…Similarly, atoms have been trapped inside hollow core photonic crystal fibers for spectroscopy [12][13][14][15] or nonlinear optics [16] and even single molecules were coupled to dielectric nano-waveguides [17]. In parallel, a great deal of theoretical investigations of the effective collective atom-field dynamics, the resulting light forces and possible applications in these systems have been carried out ranging from self organization [18][19][20][21], to nonlinear scattering [22,23]. Applications of the collective radiative behavior into the light modes also point towards improved photonic memories [24].…”

“…Hence frequency matching of only two lines will automatically align a huge manifold of frequency components. In general the frequency distribution of the pump light then gives a direct handle on the spatial shape of the interaction forces [23].…”
