Tailored lysozyme–ZnO nanoparticle conjugates as nanoantibiotics

Abstract: Covalently attached lysozyme-ZnO nanoparticle (L-ZNP) conjugates were synthesized by a low temperature solution route. Tailored L-ZNP conjugates exhibit pronounced antibacterial features against Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus).

“…[3c,4] The development of new antibiotics is one strategy to address the challenges, however new drug discovery is time‐consuming and very costly . Another promising approach for battling bacterial infection is the use of various nanoparticles which have intrinsic antimicrobial properties themselves or using such particles in combination with the existing antibiotics . Silver‐based nanoparticles are powerful antimicrobial agents against a broad range of micro‐organisms .…”

“…have been extensively evaluated to synthesize different nonstructural forms of these metal oxides. Among them, zinc oxide (ZnO), an environment-friendly semiconductor (band gap of 3.37 eV) is an interesting metal oxide with several scientific and engineering based applications [4][5][6][7]. This is one of unique materials for the fabrication of facile, high performing and low-cost biosensors.…”
