Tailoring the Q of Cymbal Transducer

Abstract: In general high Q is a desired property for transducer applications, which is the indication low loss. However for the underwater acoustic applications wide bandwidth is also a desired property. Therefore the Q values should be low to achieve wide bandwidth. Cymbal transducer has the highest figure of merit as a hydrophone and as well as huge potential for underwater projector applications. However Q of the standard cymbal transducer is higher than desired and it is a disadvantage of this transducer. In this i… Show more

“…In addition, the cymbal transducer can be easily integrated into various array forms due to its small size, which is suitable for large-area and restricted-volume arrays [ 6 ]. When cymbal transducers are used in an array, they cannot only achieve high power output, but also yield broadband characteristics caused by their interaction with the neighboring elements in the array [ 7 ]. However, cymbal transducers generally exhibit a high quality factor and a low energy conversion efficiency, which require a careful and accurate design of their array structure [ 8 ].…”

“…Flextensional actuator "cymbal" has received considerable attention for sensor and actuator applications due to their high displacement and moderate generative force and more flexibility to obtain the desired elctromechanical properties by changing the dimensions type of metals and piezoelectric ceramics [1]. Therefore, cymbal actuators are being used for underwater acoustic transducer [2], noninvasive ultrasonic transdermal insulin delivery [3], and implantable hearing aid [4].…”
