Takotsubo syndrome in Heart Failure and World Congress on Acute Heart Failure 2019: highlights from the experts

Abstract: Takotsubo syndrome was featured in various sessions and posters at the recent Heart Failure Congress and World Congress on Acute Heart Failure 2019 held in Athens. The importance and increasing recognition of this acute heart failure syndrome is reflected by the growing activity at Heart Failure Association congresses over the last 8 years. Two dedicated sessions to Takotsubo syndrome with comprehensive lectures from experts in the field and several posters highlighted new scientific progress, important aspect… Show more

“…Patients with suspected TTS were identified out of 62 214 coronary angiograms recorded in the cardiac catheterization laboratory database, using the key words ‘stress’, ‘takotsubo’, or ‘catecholamine’. The diagnosis of TTS was made according to the European Society of Cardiology Heart Failure Association criteria 5 . Exclusion criteria included a diagnosis of acute coronary occlusion, percutaneous coronary intervention, myocarditis, and cardiac arrest at first medical contact.…”

“…The diagnosis of TTS was made according to the European Society of Cardiology Heart Failure Association criteria. 5 Exclusion criteria included a diagnosis of acute coronary occlusion, percutaneous coronary intervention, myocarditis, and cardiac arrest at first medical contact. Two cardiologists reviewed all the cases, and the diagnosis of TTS was based on a consensus agreement.…”

“…Now, it is well recognized that a ‘takotsubo-like’ appearance represents only a part of this syndrome and many variant forms have been reported [ 7–9 ]. Despite its transient nature, the acute phase of TTS is characterized by a substantial incidence of adverse events such as acute heart failure, cardiogenic shock, and arrhythmias, and considerable in-hospital death (4–5%) [ 10 , 11 ]. Even at long term, TTS recurrence, cardiac and non-cardiac disorders, and increased mortality have been reported.…”

“…Beim Menschen sind Infektionen, v. a.
