Tall fescue in Australia and New Zealand

Abstract: Tall fescue is widely naturalised in Australia and New Zealand. Its use in pastoral agriculture has developed with the availability of suitable cultivars. Naturalised tall fescue is infected with Acremonium endophyte and is known to be toxic. The significance of endophyte is briefly discussed. Tall fescue can be slow to establish after sowing, and palatability is sometimes inadequate. Greatly enhanced winter growth, through the use of Mediterranean germplasm, would extend use of the species into more summer-dr… Show more

“…Where endophyte is not advantageous, host plants will develop that are not particularly adapted to its presence. In New Zealand, adventitious tall fescue growing on roadside is highly infected with endophyte and very toxic (Easton et al 1994). However, the breeding programme at Palmerston North selected strongly in favour of plants readily grazed by sheep, so that the resulting cultivar was free of endophyte (this fact was established after the role of endophyte was documented and after the cultivar was made available).…”

“…Bélanger et al (2002) avaient aussi conclu que la fétuque élevée avait une digestibilité plus élevée et une teneur en fibres plus faible que la fléole des prés à un niveau de rendement comparable. La fétuque élevée, cependant, a la répu-tation d'être peu sapide surtout sous des conditions de pâture (Moyer et Seamands 1975;Easton et al 1994). Dans le cadre de la présente étude, l'appétence de la fétuque élevée n'a pas été estimée.…”

“…However, lower milk production from cows grazing tall fescue pastures when compared with Dobson perennial ryegrass has been reported (Lowe et al 1999b) and this lower production is probably associated with the lower forage quality of tall fescue (Lowe and Bowdler 1984;Easton et al 1994;Stone 1994). …”
