Abstract:Solitons of the parametrically driven, damped nonlinear Schrödinger equation become unstable and seed spatiotemporal chaos for sufficiently large driving amplitudes. We show that the chaos can be suppressed by introducing localized inhomogeneities in the parameters of the equation. The pinning of the soliton on an "attractive" inhomogeneity expands its stability region whereas "repulsive" impurities produce an effective partitioning of the interval. We also show that attractive impurities may spontaneously nuc… Show more

scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
