Tandem mass spectrometry of metal nitrate negative ions produced by electrospray ionization

Abstract: M(NO 3 ) xϪ ions are generated by electrospray ionization (ESI) of metal solutions in nitric acid in negative ion mode. Collision-induced reactions of these ions are monitored in a tandem mass spectrometer (MS) of quadrupole-octopole-quadrupole (QoQ) geometry. For Group 1and 2 elements, the M(NO 3 ) x Ϫ ions dissociate into NO 3 Ϫ and neutral metal nitrate molecules. These elements also form some M x (NO 3 ) xϩ1 Ϫ clusters, especially Li ϩ . Metal nitrate ions from transition elements and Group 13 elements fra… Show more

“…Product-ion spectra of the uranyl-nitrate complexes obtained using SORI-CID are shown in Figure 5a, b, c, and d. These fragmentation reactions follow a pattern similar to those described for transition-metal nitrate complexes, involving loss of NO 2 and the formation of an oxo-nitrate complex followed by loss of NO 3 and reduction of the metal [43]: (Figure 5c). …”

“…The ion at m/z 410 can be assigned to [(UO 2 )(O)(NO 3 ) 2 ] Ϫ , which is supported by the observation that O 2Ϫ may undergo oxidation to form O Ϫ in gas-phase metal oxo-complexes [43]. However, note again that based solely on m/z determination, the charge states of individual components of these complexes cannot be definitively known.…”

“…The decomposition of gas-phase metal nitrate anions, M(NO 3 ) n − , can result in the elimination of neutral NO 2 , producing MO(NO 3 ) n−1 − . [12][13][14] In cases where higher oxidation states of the metal are accessible than that in the nitrate precursor, oxidation of the metal center can occur during these processes. would similarly comprise Pu(VII).…”
