Tangential Flow Filtration of Colloidal Silver Nanoparticles: A “Green” Laboratory Experiment for Chemistry and Engineering Students

Abstract: Numerous nanoparticle (NP) fabrication methodologies employ "bottom-up" syntheses, which may result in heterogeneous mixtures of NPs or may require toxic capping agents to reduce NP polydispersity. Tangential flow filtration (TFF) is an alternative "green" technique for the purification, concentration, and size-selection of polydisperse NP suspensions or colloids, in that it allows for real-time analysis and reduces the usage of additional solvent and post-synthetic reagents. Upper-division undergraduate and g… Show more

“…The XRD spectra of AgNPs confirmed the metallic composition (Supporting Information, Figure S3a). A UV-Vis absorption spectrophotometer was used to estimate the AgNP concentration using the SPR peak of AgNPs that was observed at 395 nm in good agreement with the literature (Lin et al 2011) and our recent report (Dorney et al 2014). The absorbance of AgNPs increased after the addition of 10 mg L -1 of NOM, and further addition of NOM (40, 80 and 160 mg L -1 ) decreased the AgNP absorbance.…”

“…Components larger than membrane pores are retained and pass along the membrane surface, thus flowing back to the feed reservoir. This filtration mode could minimize membrane fouling and provides a stable flux compared to dead-end filtration [ 35 , 36 ]. For a given membrane filtration system and feed solution, cross-flow velocity is the primary parameter that determines mass transfer through the membrane [ 37 ].…”

“…Metabolism (M): Recently, CPE was shown to facilitate the rapid differentiation of the two Ag species within biological (HepG2 cells) and environmental (solid wastewaters) matrices . This phase separation method is based on the selective abilities of: (a) Triton X‐114 (TX‐114) to form micelles with AgNPs above its cloud point (the detergent phase) and (b) salts like sodium thiosulfate (Na 2 S 2 O 3 ) or ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) to chelate Ag + and form hydrophilic complexes (the aqueous phase).…”
