Tango Controls and data pipeline for petawatt laser experiments

Abstract: The Centre for Advanced Laser Applications (CALA) in Garching, Germany, is home to the ATLAS-3000 multi-petawatt laser, dedicated to research on laser particle acceleration and its applications. A control system based on Tango Controls is implemented for both the laser and four experimental areas. The device server approach features high modularity, which, in addition to the hardware control, enables a quick extension of the system and allows for automated data acquisition of the laser parameters and experimen… Show more

“…Several systems in our high-power laser community, particularly European facilities [ 96 ] , are contributing to the Tango Controls platform, for example, APOLLON [ 97 ] , ELI-ALPS [ 98 ] , ELI-BEAMLINES and CALA [ 99 ] . Below, we present a case study from one of them: the PALLAS project of the CNRS National Institute for Nuclear and particle physics (IN2P3) hosted at Laboratoire de Physique des 2 infinis Irène Joliot-Curie (IJClab).…”

“…Many laboratories are currently stepping up their efforts to integrate prediction and feedback systems into their lasers and experiments [145,146] . One of the first groups to extensively make use of these techniques was the team around A. Maier at DESY's LUX facility [26] .…”

“…High-power neodymium-glass laser drivers have become the worldwide system of choice for laser fusion research [1,2] . They serve as a crucial platform for research in high-energy-density physics [3] , such as x-ray generation, laser plasma physics [4] , and laboratory astrophysics. Following propagation in a nonlinear medium, a high-power laser undergoes whole-beam self-focusing (WBSF) and SSSF owing to third-order nonlinear polarization; the latter is more destructive [5][6][7] .…”
