Domesticated white bass Morone chrysops can be used in selective breeding programs to produce sunshine bass (female white bass 3 male striped bass M. saxatilis). In addition to fast growth or favorable feed conversion, selection could be based on favorable egg or larval characteristics. Eggs from 12 white bass were fertilized with striped bass sperm to produce sunshine bass larvae and were individually photographed and incubated. The yolk sac larvae hatched from these eggs were also photographed within 3 h of hatching. Percent hatch ranged from 49% to 96%. Egg and larval characteristics were determined from the digital images. Total lipid and fatty acid composition were determined for eggs from each female. Average egg volume ranged from 0.32 to 0.42 mm 3 . Standard lengths of yolk sac larvae ranged from 2.51 to 3.62 mm. The relation between individual egg volumes and individual standard lengths explained only 1% of the variability in length at hatch. Average egg characteristics were generally unrelated to average length at hatch, but fatty acid composition was related to percent hatch. Maternal effects explained about 11% of the variability in individual length at hatch, and time to hatch (i.e., the length of time from fertilization to hatch for an individual embryo) explained 25% of the variability in individual length at hatch. Some females produced eggs and larvae with characteristics that were more suitable to increasing survival and fingerling production. Selection for these characteristics in broodstock white bass females could lead to improved production of sunshine bass fingerlings.

Summary Burbot Lota lota L. is one of the endangered freshwater fish species in western Europe for which the development of controlled larval rearing procedures could produce enough material for stock enhancement. The suitability of the freshwater rotifer Brachionus calyciflorus as a start food for larviculture of burbot was investigated. After yolk‐absorption, the larvae were stocked in 40‐L tanks under different feeding conditions: clear water rearing conditions with rotifers (Brachionus calyciflorus) for 10 days (R), green water conditions (Chlorella sp.) with rotifers offered for 10 days (MALR), green water conditions (Chlorella sp.) for 3 days followed by clear water in combination with rotifer feeding for 7 days (AL3R), and clear water conditions with Artemia nauplii offered for 10 days (Art). After the 10‐day feeding, all groups received Artemia nauplii up to 35 days post‐hatching. Larval survival was counted at day 10 and at the end of the 35‐day rearing experiment. At day 35, a significant survival difference was noted between the groups where rotifers were supplemented with algae vs only Artemia. At the end of the experiment, the highest survival rate (69.20%) was obtained with larvae receiving only algae in the first 3 days of feeding. Lowest survival rate (24.90%) was obtained with larvae receiving only Artemia for 35 days. This indicates that smaller prey are essential for burbot at first feeding. Larval length and wet weight were measured at the time of mouth opening, at days 7, 10, and 21, and at the end of the experiment (day 35). On day 35, mean length of the larvae varied significantly between the treatments. However, the final wet weight of the larvae did not vary significantly between the treatments.

Changes in Lipid and Fatty Acid Composition of Wild Freshwater Zooplankton during Enrichment and Subsequent Starvation

Concentrated wild zooplankton harvested from freshwater ponds have been used to feed the larvae of hybrid striped bass (female white bass Morone chrysops × male striped bass M. saxatilis) in tanks. However, larval growth and survival have been superior when cultured rotifers and brine shrimp Artemia spp. nauplii have been offered as first feeds. We hypothesized that enrichment with highly unsaturated fatty acids (HUFAs), which is common for cultured zooplankton, would enhance the nutritional value of wild freshwater zooplankton. Wild zooplankton were enriched for 24 h with Super Selco, a formula rich in HUFAs. Lipid and fatty acid composition changes in wild freshwater zooplankton were monitored during the enrichment period and the subsequent 72 h. Total lipids in wild zooplankton increased from a preenrichment level of 38 mg/g dry weight (DW) to 72 mg/g DW after enrichment. Although wild zooplankton were initially deficient in HUFAs, the HUFA level after enrichment was 10.41 mg/g DW, which was above the recommended level for good growth and survival of hybrid striped bass larvae. The nutritional state of wild zooplankton returned to the preenrichment level 24 h after enrichment was terminated. Therefore, enriching wild zooplankton from culture ponds for 24 h after harvesting and concentration offers producers another nutritional option for hybrid striped bass larvae during the early life history stages.
