Tanshinol alleviates ulcerative colitis by promoting the expression of VLDLR

Abstract: Tanshinol (TAN) is a widely used Chinese medicine ingredient with anti-inflammatory activity. The therapeutic effect of TAN in ulcerative colitis (UC) deserves further investigation. DSS induced UC model for mice, and TAN of different concentrations was used for in vivo therapy. Colons length was measured; expression of VLDLR in colonic mucosal tissue was evaluated by qRT-PCR, Western blot and histochemical staining. Besides, normal colorectal mucosal cell line (FHC) was treated with LPS to imitate the inflamm… Show more

“…Zhu et al used TAN (15.30 mg/kg) to intervene in DSS-induced UC mice for 14 days without setting a positive control group. The results showed that TAN was able to downregulate the activities of Caspase-3 and Caspase-9, inhibit the inflammatory levels of TNF-α, IL-6, IL-8IL-1β, and upregulate the expression of anti-apoptotic protein Bcl-2, which effectively inhibited endogenous apoptotic signaling, and alleviated the structural tissue destruction of colonic tissues and infiltration of inflammatory factors to a certain extent in UC mice (Zhu et al, 2021). The above findings suggest that all these compounds can modulate endogenous mitochondrial pathways, such as the anti-apoptotic protein Bcl-2, to achieve the treatment of UC, and such drugs may be candidates for the treatment of UC in the future.…”
