Targeting the pro‐inflammatory factor CCL2 (MCP‐1) with Bindarit for influenza A (H7N9) treatment

Abstract: Influenza A viruses are important human and animal pathogens. Seasonal influenza viruses cause infections every year, and occasionally zoonotic viruses emerge to cause pandemics with significantly higher morbidity and mortality rates. Three cases of laboratory confirmed human infection with avian influenza A (H7N9) virus were reported in 2013, and there have been several cases reported across South East Asia, and recently in North America. Most patients experience severe respiratory illness, with mortality rat… Show more

“…Higher levels of chemokines, including IP-10, IL-8 and MCP-1, were believed to be associated with the acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) progression and even fatal outcome in patients with H5N1 or H7N9 virus infection [14,50]. Blockade of IP-10 and MCP-1 was proved to significantly lessen the disease severity of influenza virus infection [51,52]. Expression of COX-2 and PGE 2 has been suggested to play a role in enhancing virus-induced inflammation and impairment of host antiviral immunity [39,53].…”

“…Monocyte chemoattractant protein-1 (MCP-1; also referred to as chemokine [C-C motif] ligand 2 [CCL2]) plays an important role in inflammation [ 13 ]. CCL2 is a small cytokine associated with proinflammation or inflammation and mainly induces acute inflammatory damage in humans under pathological conditions [ 14 ].…”

“…The problem of bacterial complications post respiratory viral infections signaling can become an important therapeutic approach to preventing both cytokine storm effects and the development of secondary bacterial complications in the areas adjacent to the respiratory tract [79,82,[103][104][105].…”
