This paper reviews select examples of recent targets produced by the group, including 171Yb wires, 62Ni pellets, and 25Mg foils. The targets discussed will cover the processes and equipment used for stable isotope manufacturing at ORNL and give a broader understanding of thin film preparation techniques, preparation of high-purity and specialty materials, and development of highly material-conservative methods.

“…A glass bell jar, a baseplate with all of the necessary connections for multiple evaporation sources, and interchangeable modules for carbon arc and boron electron-gun evaporation, completed the system. The electron-gun source was obtained from MicroFoils Co. [1]; its characteristics have been described in [2]. It is similar in design to the AWRE source used by Csihas [3] and the version described by Beag [4], in that it is electrostatically focused; no magnetic focusing or scanning is used.…”

Abstract. Parameters being actively tested by the accelerator community for the purpose of extending carbon stripper foil lifetimes in fast ion beams include methods of deposition, parting agents, mounting techniques, support (fork) materials, and inclusion of alloying elements, particularly boron. Specialized production apparatus is required for either sequential deposition or co-deposition of boron in carbon foils. A dual-use vacuum evaporator for arc evaporation of carbon and electron-beam evaporation of boron and other materials has been built for such development. Production of both carbon and boron foils has begun and improvements are in progress.
