Task‐based information retrieval: Structuring undergraduate history essays for better course evaluation using essay‐type visualizations

Abstract: Stage 3, the exploration stage of researching an assignment, they often do not know their information need; this causes them to go back to Stage 2, the topic-selection stage, when they are selecting keywords to formulate their query to an Information Retrieval (IR) system. Our hypothesis is that instead of going backward, they should be going forward toward a goal state-the performance of the task for which they are seeking the information. If they can somehow construct their goal state into a query, this forw… Show more

“…One possible explanation for this is that recreational goals were identified more by children while personal goals were highly related to older adults, and both of these goals were found less motivating than educational or job-related goals. Leide et al (2007) identified task structure as the essential nature of the task -in particular, different essay types. They further tested whether a task-focused visualization device can effectively assist students in their task performance even though the result is inconclusive.…”

“…The tasks and their definitions are shown in Table 1. To minimize the effect of using different tasks, task structure, complexity and prior knowledge requirements of each task were normalized (Leide el al., 2007). The difficulty of the tasks was adjusted to be equal using NASA's Task Load Index (TLX) (Hart et.…”

“…One example is Kuhlthau (1988) who in a major study identified the stages of information problem resolution and then subsequently proposed a model of users' steps within the problem resolution process: initiation, topic selection, pre-focus exploration, focus formulation, information collection, and search closure. This idea is also utilised by Leide et al (2007) to present a study of task based searching, the end goal being writing essays. In contrast, work by McGregor (1994) showed that students are "focused on a final product rather than a process".…”
