Tasks, self-efficacy, and L2 motivational self system in an online emergency EFL speaking class: A mixed-methods study

Abstract: Since the World Health Organization initially declared the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, new issues have arisen in English language teaching (ELT). Although task-based language teaching (TBLT) and task-supported language teaching (TSLT) have received significant academic attention and recognition in traditional classroom settings, there is insufficient research on their effects on students’ L2 motivational self system and speaking self-efficacy in an online emergency EFL classroom. Therefore, this mixed-m… Show more

“…It is often argued that self-efficacy can play a central role in students’ online learning as it might have great contributions to their success in virtual contexts ( Zimmerman and Kulikowich, 2016 ; Tang et al, 2022 ). Furthermore, Quang et al (2022) demonstrated that those EFL learners who are equipped with online self-efficacy tend to be more successful in online environments. More importantly, previous researchers have established that online self-efficacy has been related to students’ wellbeing and success (i.e., online course satisfaction) (e.g., Shen et al, 2013 ; Suryandani and Santosa, 2021 ; Aldhahi et al, 2022 ; Derakhshesh et al, 2022 ).…”

“…In language learning with technology, technology acceptance with self-efficacy and attitude are entwined especially in the higher education institutions contexts. Self-efficacy is crucial for persistence since learners are more likely to continue in the face of challenges if they think that the outcomes they accomplish are due to things in their control (Graham, 2022;Nguyen et al, 2022). The concept of self-efficacy refers to the perspicacity of possibilities in how learners perceive the task's degree of difficulty and level of confidence.…”

“…When students do well, they develop self-confidence and believe they will succeed in their studies. Self-efficacy has been a spot of prolific research in the field of general education for many years, and it has risen to the attention of second language researchers in the last two decades (An et al, 2021;Nguyen et al, 2022). Self-efficacy refers to a learner's conviction in their capacity to perform a task successfully.…”

“…Higher education institutions face significant challenges because of campus closing and social distancing procedures, which have significantly affected all learning and teaching activities (Alqahtani & Rajkhan, 2020;Turnbull et al, 2021). Consequently, universities and colleges must promptly transition from the traditional face-to-face classroom to various virtual teaching and learning forms to subdue the pandemic's unprecedented disruptions and far-reaching effects on students' learning attainment (Nguyen et al, 2022). Statistically, over 60% of students worldwide have studied and assessed online via different platforms adopted by their institutions (UNESCO, 2020).…”
