Taxonomic Studies on Some Freshwater Diatoms from the Eastern Terai Region, Nepal

Epiphytic diatoms of Hasina pond were studied during winter, summer, and monson seasons in 2014-2015. Samples were collected by squeezing submerged roots and leaves of hydrophytes and frustules were cleaned using nitric acid. A total 59 diatoms under 27 genera and 19 families were reported among which 33 diatoms were new to the country. Epithemia adnata, Rhopalodia gibba, Gomphonema truncatum, Nitzschia palea, Ulnaria acus, U. ulna and Pinnularia amabilis were dominant in the pond. Diatom species were found maximum in summer (40%) and minimum in monsoon (28%) seasons.

Some freshwater algae from Bagh-Jhoda wetland, Morang: new for Nepal

Present paper describes new and interesting algae reported during the exploration of algal flora of Bagh-Jhoda wetland, Morang. A total of 20 species of freshwater algae, excluding cyanobacteria, have been reported from this wetland as new for Nepal. They were Ankistrodesmus spiralis, Botryococcus braunii, B. protuberans, Glaucocystis duplex, Gonium sociale, Kirchneriella contorta, Nephrocytium hydrophilum, N.obesum, Oocystiseremosphaeria, Sorastrum americanum, Staurastrum pseudosebaldi, S. striolatum var. divergens, S. subpolymorphum, Glenodinium borgei, Peridinium gatunense, Gomphonema lacusrankaloides, G. pseudoaugur, Nitzschia cf. pumila, Pinnularia amabilis and Ulnaria capitata. This wetland area is rich in algal diversity including red algae and it needs further extensive exploration.

Algal flora of Betana wetland, Morang, Nepal

There are different wetland ecosystems, different resources, diversity of environment and habitat, and diversity of resource user groups in a region. Local communities exploit these resources and incorporate them into their livelihood strategies. Among these biological diversities, fish are most important and most noticeable wetland resources because they pass through markets and have a recognized role in food supply. Indigenous communities depend on exploiting wetland fisheries. Since past few years, wetlands are degrading rapidly. Poor indigenous communities still relay on catching fish. These communities have characterized by unsuitable living conditions, low level of education, lack of skills and assets and inadequate services which would permit diversification of their livelihoods. We can notice such peculiar activities around the Pangre Jhalas wetland.
