Taxonomic studies on the genus Isotrema (Aristolochiaceae) from China: II. I. brevilimbum (Aristolochiaceae), a new species from Guizhou, China

Abstract: A new species of Isotrema was recently discovered from Guizhou, China and is here named as I. brevilimbum. It is most similar to I. ovatifolium and I. wardianum, but differs in the morphology of leaves and flowers. A detailed description for the new species, along with line drawings, photographs, as well as morphological comparisons with similar species, are provided. In addition, the distributio… Show more

“…During a field expedition to Yunnan, Southwest China, some unknown specimens of Isotrema were discovered. After careful comparison with previously known species and study of related literature (Hwang 1988;Ma 1989aMa , 1989bTao 1997;Hwang et al 2003;Do et al 2015;Do and Nghiem 2017;Yang et al 2018;Zhu et al 2019aZhu et al , 2019dCai et al 2020aCai et al , 2020bWang et al 2020aWang et al , 2020b, we confirm it as a new species, describe and illustrate it below.…”

“…Comprising 109 species, the genus mainly occurring in East and South Asia, with a few species disjunctly distributed in North and Central America (Zhu et al 2019a). Currently, 71 species of Isotrema are recorded in China, of which 57 are endemic (Hwang et al 2003;Lai et al 2019;Li et al 2019;Peng et al 2019;Zhou et al 2019;Zhu et al 2019aZhu et al , 2019bZhu et al , 2019cZhu et al , 2019dCai et al 2020aCai et al , 2020bLuo et al 2020;Wang et al 2020aWang et al , 2020bLiao et al 2021).…”

“…O.C.Schmidt (Schmidt 1935) and differ from others of Aristolochia by having perianth strongly curved, gynostemium 3-lobed, anthers paired on the outer surface of each gynostemium segment, and capsule dehiscing basipetally. This generic concept is followed in many later publications (Li et al 2019;Zhou et al 2019;Zhu et al 2019a;Zhu et al 2019c;Zhu et al 2019d;Cai et al 2020a;Wang et al 2020a;Wang et al 2020b). Although several other authors still prefer assigning their newly described species under Aristolochia subgenus Siphisia (e.g., Cai et al 2020b;Luo et al 2020;Zhou et al 2020;Do et al 2021), of which Isotrema was accepted as one of synonyms in the most recent nomenclatural review of Aristolochia-related taxa by Ohi-Toma and Murata (2016), the phylogenetic results by Zhu et al (2019e) appear to be robust because of their extensive samples of Asian species and combination of molecular, chromosomic and morphological data.…”

“…During our botanical surveys in Pu Ta Leng Mountain, Lai Chau Province of northern Vietnam in 2020, we encountered a species that looks very much like I. wardianum (J.S.Ma) X.X.Zhu, S.Liao & J.S.Ma from China, India and Myanmar (Ma 1989;Zhu et al 2019a;Wang et al 2020b). After careful examination of the plant, we concluded it is a new species that is described here.…”
