Taxonomic Study of the Genus Pholiota (Strophariaceae, Basidiomycota) in Korea

Abstract: The genus Pholiota (Strophariaceae, Basidiomycota) is made up of wood-rotting saprotrophic mushrooms characterized by a yellow or brown pileus with scales and/or slimy, and by a brownish smooth spore with a germ pore. However, these features are not enough to distinguish its species, or separate the genus Pholiota from other brown-spored wood-rotting genera such as Hypholoma and Stropharia. Although internal transcribed spacer (ITS) sequencebased identification has improved identification accuracy for species … Show more

“…Psilocybe mushrooms are Basidiomycota members of the family Strophariaceae [ 171 ]. The species of this genus are cosmopolitan, the best known are the P. cubensis ( Figure 11 A) and the P. Mexicana, which grow in Central America and have been historically used for shamanic rites [ 172 ].…”

“…These compounds were first identified by Hoffmann and colleagues working on a sample of P. mexicana collected by Heim [ 178 ]. Together with the genus Psilocybe , mushrooms also belonging to the genera Conocybe and Stropharia show marked hallucinogenic actions [ 171 ]. Conocybe is known to contain psilocybin [ 179 ], and its analogue baeocystin [ 180 ].…”

“…For fungi, at the genus level, distinct taxa included Pholiota , a wood-rotting saprotroph 72,73 , Cladosporium , a genus which hosts both plant pathogens and endophytes 74 , and an unresolved genus in the family Teratosphaeriaceae, a group which includes stem and leaf pathogens 75 . This collection of generally saprotrophic or pathotrophic fungal endophytes further corroborates class-level observations that the fungal microbiome within the wood of living trees may be well-situated to become pioneer decomposers upon tree death.…”

“…use the name Coriolus versicolor (homotypic synonym) instead of Trametes versicolor or use the name Pholiota nameko (heterotypic synonym) instead of Ph. microspora (Neda 2008;Justo and Hibbett 2011;Lee et al 2020); (2) use a name which is taxonomically represent the same species, but nomenclaturally not validly published, e.g. use the name Ganoderma cupreolaccatum instead of G. pfeifferi (Papp et al 2022); (3) use a synonym name which systematically incorrect, because generic name has been represent a different group of fungi, e.g.…”
