Taxonomical and distribution guide of diatoms in soda pans of Central Europe

Abstract: Th e 93 most characteristic and dominant diatom taxa (including varieties and forms) of soda pans are presented in this study with detailed information on their distribution. Th e taxonomical position of fi ve taxa is still unclear. Altogether 1257 light and 180 scanning electron microscopic photos are shown from cleaned valves and frustules as well as from living cells (cultures isolated from these lakes).

“…In the last couple of years there has been a growing demand for the fi ner recognition of siliceous algae; therefore several richly illustrated publications have been prepared (e.g. Potapova 2014, Stenger-Kovács andLengyel 2015). Th e special importance of such kind lies in the fact that images of these diatoms are now available for comparison and future biogeographical studies.…”

“…Permanent slides were analyzed under a light microscope (Zeiss Axiovert A1, plan‐apochromat objective with differential interference contrast) and a scanning electron microscope (Hitachi S‐2600N). A minimum of 400 valves were identified at the highest possible taxonomic resolution (Stenger‐Kovács & Lengyel, ).…”
