Taxonomy for citizen actions on public health and climate change: a proposal

Abstract: Facing complex issues such as climate change and its effects on public health require the participation of various actors. The research tool citizen science is one way for people to get involved. Through it, citizens collaborate with scientists to find solutions to problems in their territories. From a participatory work with citizens, we designed a taxonomy proposal, which can facilitate citizen and community action in suggesting research ideas. We expect stakeholders to use it to systematically classify and … Show more

“…Endorsing data standards can also provide a significant opportunity to leverage data knowledge and accelerate needed data-driven Planetary Health solutions such as artificial intelligence 27,28 . Future research should focus on developing a unifying Planetary Health informatics agenda that may include a Planetary Health taxonomy 29 . This shared taxonomy can facilitate communication and data exchange across multiple fields (eg, environmental and public health).…”

“…The scores are then summed up and translated into a final score. Scores are considered low between 0 and 6 points, low-medium (7)(8)(9)(10)(11)(12), medium (13)(14)(15)(16)(17)(18)(19), medium-high (20)(21)(22)(23)(24)(25)(26), and high (27)(28)(29)(30)(31)(32). This score shows the quality of the study.…”

“…This research approach offers benefits for both citizens and scientific professionals [ 8 ]. Citizens, on the one hand, experience empowerment through the opportunity to take on responsibilities and addressing relevant problems [ 9 ], while on the other hand, they develop scientific skills [ 8 , 10 ], making it an educational tool with formative and awareness-raising impact [ 11 ]. As far as scientists are concerned, CS projects drive new questions, hypotheses, and increased participation, facilitating greater research capacity in a more efficient manner [ 12 ].…”

“…These changes have caused an increase in the mortality of the population and in the contagion of certain diseases. 10 Among the aforementioned events, heat and cold waves have been specifically related to an increase in mortality from various causes, with heart attacks being predominant; alterations in rainfall and drought have led to a higher incidence of diarrhea in the population under 5 years of age, as well as other gastrointestinal infections, handfoot mouth disease and leptospirosis; infectious disease infections have also increased, a main trigger being the progressive adaptation of some vectors such as Aedes aegypti and A. albopictus to certain areas that were previously inaccessible due to weather conditions. albopictus, to certain areas that were previously inaccessible due to their climatic conditions; likewise, air pollution by fossil fuels has been associated with greater morbidity and mortality, which has been estimated to have reduced life expectancy by 2.9 years worldwide.…”
