Introduction: The management of university campuses in the context of COVID-19 makes the mental health of college students draw much attention. Objective: To explore the effects of physical exercise under COVID-19 on sleep quality and mood of college students. Methods: 1983 college students from The Civil Aviation University of China were selected, and their physical exercise state, sleep quality, and emotional state were measured by a questionnaire. Results: Physical exercise has a significant positive effect on college students’ mood and sleep quality, and sleep quality has a considerable impact on their mood. There is no gender difference in mood and sleep quality. The amount of physical exercise has a significant difference in sleep quality and mood. Compared with the students who do a lot of physical exercises, those who do a lot of physical exercises have higher sleep quality and more vital stronger emotional control ability. Conclusion: This study can provide a reference for universities to carry out mental health education during the particular period of epidemic prevention and control. Research Highlights: This study examined the emotional and cognitive health benefits of nature in comparison with working memory training. It considered the long-term effects, the application of mobile terminal technology, and routine-based approaches with the aim of integrating nature’s health benefits into people’s daily lives. Background and Objectives: Infectious diseases and aging may limit people’s activities indoors; the recovery effect of nature has been widely recognized, and terminal technology is developing rapidly. In this context, we want to explore the emotional and cognitive effects of viewing nature (VR) videos on mobile devices for a long time. Materials and Methods: The experiment employed a between-subjects design, with participants being randomly assigned to one of four groups: a forest VR video group, a water VR group, a working memory training group, and a control group. The participants watched the video three times a week for 20 min each for four weeks. The number of valid participants for compliance, preference, and willingness was 136, and the number of valid participants for the study of emotional and cognitive effects was 62. Brief Profile of Mood States (BPOMS) scales, running memory accuracy, shifting cost, etc., were used as indicators to reflect emotions and cognition. A repeated measures analysis of variance was performed on these indicators at four groups × two time points (pretest/post-test). Results: ① There were no significant differences in the participants’ adherence, preferences, and willingness to watch different natural videos and perform working memory training. ② Long-term home training (e.g., watching VR nature videos or working memory training) may have had a minimal effect on emotional responses to mobile terminals. However, home training may be more conducive to the stabilization of anger. ③ Watching forest VR videos had a positive effect on the updating function of the brain; watching water VR videos was beneficial for the shifting function and automatic processing speed; and working memory training had a positive effect on the updating and shifting functions. Conclusions: There were no significant differences in adherence, preference, willingness, and effects on emotion and cognition between long-term forest VR video viewing, water VR video viewing, and working memory training on mobile terminals. All three types of home training may be beneficial for the stabilization of emotion (especially anger), and all can have some positive effects on cognition.

Biotic Response to Rapid Environmental Changes During the Permian–Triassic Mass Extinction

The divergent patterns of Permian–Triassic mass extinction (PTME) have been extensively documented in varying water depth settings. We here investigated fossil assemblages and sedimentary microfacies on high-resolution samples from two adjacent sections of the South China Block: Chongyang from shallow-water platform and Chibi from deeper-water slop. At Chongyang, abundant benthos (over 80%), including rugose corals, fusulinids, calcareous algae, and large foraminifers, disappeared precipitously at the topmost of Changxing Formation grainstone, which suggested complete damage of the benthic ecosystem, confirming a sudden single-pulse extinction pattern. The end-Permian regression, marked by a karst surface, provided a plausible explanation for this extinction pattern. Whereas for the fauna in Chibi, the benthos was relatively abundant (20%–55%) with more trace fossils and lacking calcareous algae. Benthic abundance in Chibi reduced by two steps at the two claystone beds (Beds 10 and 18): bioclastic content dropped from an average of 50% in Beds 1–9 to 10% in Beds 11–17 and then to less than 5% in Beds 19–23, suggesting a two-pulse extinction. At the first pulse, large foraminifers were prominent victims in both shallow- and deeper-water settings. A plausible survival strategy for small-sized foraminifers was to migrate to deeper water to avoid extreme heat in shallow water. The early Triassic transgression prompted some small foraminifers to migrate back to original platforms and flourish briefly as disaster forms. At the Early Triassic mudstone with bottom-water settings in Chibi, the appearance of abundant small pyrite framboids (diameters of 4.74–5.96 μm), an indicator of intensified oxygen deficiency, was simultaneous with the two-step reduction of benthic diversity and abundance. Thus, anoxic conditions might be the main cause of the PTME at deeper-water settings. Our study is an example of the wider debate about biotic response to rapid environmental change for both the Permian–Triassic transition and modern days.
