TCP Variants for Data Center Networks: A Comparative Study

Abstract: Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) has been the workhorse of the Internet ever since its inception. The success of the Internet, infact, can be partly attributed to the congestion control mechanisms implemented in TCP. Though the scale of the Internet and its usage increased exponentially in recent past, TCP has evolved to keep up with the changing network conditions and has proven to be scalable and robust. However, the performance of TCP in Data Center Networks has been a major concern recently because it l… Show more

“…Data center networks are finely designed and layered to achieve high bandwidth and low latency. As a result, the data center environment is highly different than that of the Internet, especially in terms of round trip time (RTT) [5]. The main characteristics of a data center network are high-speed links, limited-size switch buffers, low propagation delays and fault tolerance.…”

“…There are three types of traffic that exist in DCNs : mice traffic or query traffic (small query response traffic like web search, facebook notification etc), cat traffic (medium size downloads and photo uploads etc) and elephant traffic (software downloads, large video downloads) [4]. Majority of the traffic in DCNs is usually query traffic and carries less data volume.…”
