Teacher and Tutor Conferencing

Abstract

Teacher and tutor conferencing are widely used in higher education to assist in the development of advanced writing. This holds true for second language (SL) writers as well, but as the diversity of SL writers in tertiary institutions grows, so does the need for varied responses in teacher and tutor conferencing. This entry describes evidence‐based characteristics of conferencing with SL writers, including common dilemmas that call for a greater awareness of the differences between SL writers and native English‐speaker writers. By becoming aware of the many possibilities for variation in SL writers and in conferencing, tutors and teachers can make informed decisions about how to adjust their conferencing practices to benefit all SL writers.
