Teacher-conducted trial-based functional analysis and treatment of multiply controlled challenging behavior.

Abstract: We trained a public school teacher to conduct a trial-based functional analysis (FA) in her self-contained classroom during school hours with other children present. Using FA data as baseline, we validated our intervention by tracking changes in response latencies from the onset of relevant establishing operations (compounded across time). Latency data and social validity measures both confirmed treatment efficacy.

“…A final limitation may be associated with the population targeted for this study. Historically, naturalistic implementers have only needed to execute valid TBFA trials (e.g., Bloom et al, 2013 ; Lambert et al, 2012 , 2017 ; LeJeune et al, 2019 ). In those studies, data interpretation and management were tasks relegated to experts in behavior analysis.…”

“…This was done because naturalistic implementers must often assess the validity of the trials which they conduct without experimenter oversight (cf. Bloom et al, 2013 ; LeJeune et al, 2019 ). Thus, we wanted to assess the degree to which their judgments aligned with our own before asking them to conduct TBFAs of actual challenging behavior.…”

“…The high and intense levels of problem behavior exhibited by students like Maddie require highly skilled clinicians to conduct effective assessments and implement successful interventions. Although we based the functional analysis procedures on Langthorne et al (2011), there are additional functional analysis models that may be safer and provide more precise results, such as trial-based (LeJeune et al, 2019), latency-based (Lambert et al, 2017), and interview-informed synthesized (Slaton et al, 2017) functional analyses. Clinicians must be fluent in the conceptualization and implementation of these assessments to obtain safe and accurate results.…”

“…Applied behavior analysts have trained others to implement TBFAs. This includes other professionals involved in the delivery of services to the individual engaging in challenging behavior such as special education professionals (Kunnavatanna, Bloom, Samaha, & Dayton, 2013a ; Kunnavatana, Bloom, Lignugaris/Kraft et al, 2013b ; Lejeune et al, 2018 ; Rispoli et al, 2016 ) residential staff, (Lambert et al, 2013 ) and head start professionals (Rispoli et al, 2015 ). More recently, researchers have trained parents to implement TBFAs.…”
