Teacher ratings of children's problem and competence behaviors: Normative and parametric characteristics

Abstract: Teacher-rated adjustment differences among young elementary school children from (a) a recent sample and a 1974 cohort, and (b) urban/suburban, male/female, and grade-level subgroups were examined. A problem behavior checklist (Classroom Adjustment Rating Scale) and a school competence measure (Health Resources Inventory) for 974 children from 5 urban and 5 suburban schools were completed by 101 first- to fourth-grade teachers. Children from the more current cohort were rated as significantly more maladjusted … Show more

“…By age 11, the proportion of girls and boys transferred from an A-ARC disappeared. These results differ from the ndings of McGee et al (1987), Schachar, Sandberg, and Rutter (1986), and Weissberg et al (1987). If teachers' tolerance explains the gender differences before age 11, the absence of difference at that age may be related to the beginning of puberty.…”

“…These ndings support the contention that early disruptive behaviours lead to poor school performance Farnworth et al, 1985;Huesmann et al, 1987;Loeber et al, 1989;Tremblay et al, 1992). According to McGee et al (1987) and Weissberg et al (1987), highly disruptive children are at greater risk for school failure because the behaviours of these children are brought more to the attention of teachers. Finally, because there is a high association between attention de cits and disruptive behaviours, boys who display disruptive classroom behaviours may be at higher risk for school failure.…”

“…The problem behavior scale was computed as the mean of 18 items and had a Cronbach's alpha of .91. An evaluation of the normative and parametric characteristics of the TCRS is reported by Weissberg et al (1987).…”

“…The HRI provided a measure of competencies in children (parent report and teacher report) to balance out the measures of affective and behavioral problems. The HRI was developed for use with elementary school-aged children and its psychometric properties have been reported to be acceptable to good Gesten, 1976; Koegh et al, 1989;Weissberg et al, 1987). The HRI factor structure has been reported to be similar between parents and teachers.…”
