Teaching about prejudice with a Bogardus Social Distance Scale activity: Replication and extension

Abstract: This study presents a three-year replication and extension of Maurer's (2013) evaluation of a classroom activity to reduce prejudice and discrimination. Students in six sections of an introductory family science course were assigned to one of three conditions and one of two target marginalized groups for a 3x2 design. Results differed significantly from those reported by Maurer (2013), and suggested that all three methods tested were equally effective in reducing prejudice and discrimination and that such chan… Show more

“…An example from a similar pre-and post-course self-assessment of prejudice may serve to make the point here. Undergraduate students were given self-assessment instruments to measure their level of prejudice against two target groups both pre-and post-the course, in which different teaching methods were aiming at reducing prejudice (Maurer & Keim 2018). The student co-researcher commented:…”

“…The Bogardus Social Distance Scale developed to measure social distance among people was used as data collection tool (Bogardus, 1925). The Bogardus scale is used to reveal prejudices, stereotyping and perceptions that could cause discrimination between groups (Maurer, 2013). Scale items usually consist of 5 to 7 degrees of closeness.…”

“…For example, Maurer (2013) evaluated a teaching strategy targeting social distance and discrimination through the implementation of the Bogardus Social Distance Scale; results indicated greater positive changes toward the target group (gay people) among students who received the teaching intervention than those who did not. However, Maurer and Keim (2018) performed a three-year replication and extension of Maurer's (2013) work, and their findings differed significantly. Results from six sections of an introductory family science course wherein students were assigned to one of three conditions illustrated that all were equally effective in reducing prejudice and discrimination, suggesting the need for additional research in this area (Maurer & Keim, 2018).…”
