Teaching and learning probability using games: A systematic review of research from 2010-2020

Abstract: Probability is relatively a new discipline in school curricula in many countries. There is rich literature on students’ personal beliefs and misconceptions in probability.  However, less attention has been paid to the development of students’ probabilistic thinking in the classroom. Recently suggestions have been made to use games and simulations to overcome misconceptions in probability. This paper presents a systematic literature review that focuses on identification of games for the teaching and learning of… Show more

“…Since the students are already familiar with the Akan culture, once the concept of geometry is link to the culture it makes the lesson so real and thereby increase student interest, remove fear and improve on academic achievement as found by (Arthur, 2019;Arthur et al, 2022). Researcher across Africa have also come up with similar studies in their jurisdictions where local practices were linked to mathematics concepts (Nur et al, 2020;Sharna et al, 2021;Turugari, 2022). The constructivist learning comes in where the environment of the student becomes avenue for learning.…”

“…Probability is a tool for describing, measuring, and modeling randomness to help people make sensible decisions under random conditions (Gong & He, 2017). Any misunderstandings about probability can affect a person's decision-making in important situations (Sharna, Sharma, Doyle, Marcelo, & Kumar, 2021). Such is the importance of probability that students of mathematics as prospective teachers need adequate abilities to transfer back the knowledge they have to students.…”
