Teaching computational thinking to space science students

Abstract: Computational thinking is a key skill for space science graduates, who must apply advanced problem-solving skills to model complex systems, analyse big data sets, and develop control software for mission-critical space systems. We describe our work using Design Thinking to understand the challenges that students face in learning these skills. In the MSc Space Science & Technology at University College Dublin, we have used insights from this process to develop new teaching strategies, including improved ass… Show more

“…To support students understanding, experts employ technology and computers to precisely define and simulate objects in space. Space science courses can help early-career space scientists develop sophisticated computing skills [8]. Research has been done to evaluate the reliability and validity of space science awareness tools [9].…”

“…It aims to teach postgraduate students to comprehensively apply system modeling knowledge and simulation skills. With the complexity of engineering systems, postgraduates must apply advanced problem-solving skills to model complex systems [3] to follow the trend of scientific and technological development and the promotion of the progress of national defense science and technology, which has led to "Engineering System Modeling and Simulation" becoming particularly important. Reference [4] draws on and applies Australian understanding of effective teaching to examine the concept of effective teaching.…”
