Teaching Consonants to Profoundly Hearing-Impaired Speakers Using Palatometry

Abstract: Five profoundly hearing-impaired children were taught the consonants /t,d,k,g,s,z∫/ using palatometry. Changes in linguapalatal contact patterns and listener perceptions showed significant improvement in the place and manner of consonants produced by all subjects. Velar stops were as easily and accurately learned as alveolar stops. Distinctive sibilants were also found by the end of training. Sounds not previously present in a subject’s phonetic repetoire were learned more accurately than those present but ina… Show more

“…EPG has been used successfully to treat disorders ranging from dyspraxia (Hardcastle & Edwards 1992), dysarthria (Wood & Hardcastle 1999), cleft palate (Gibbon et al 2001;Whitehill, Stokes & Man, 1996), glossectomy (Fletcher 1988) and dysfluency (Wood 1993; to speech problems related to deafness (Fletcher & Hasegawa 1983;Dagenais & CritzCrosby 1991;Fletcher, Dagenais, & Critz-Crozby 1991a;Dagenais, Critz-Crozby, Fletcher & McCutcheon 1994;Crawford 1995;Parsloe 1998). However, no research to date has been based on children who have cochlear implants.…”

“…This is surprising, as EPG provides clear visual feedback of place of articulation for a range of sounds (Fletcher et al, 1991;Gibbon et al, 1993), which can be particularly problematic for deaf speakers. For certain consonants, a contrast in place of articulation is difficult to discriminate auditorily and difficult to perceive visually, e.g., alveolar versus velar consonants.…”

“…Many studies report improvement in clients' productions of specific phonemes where traditional therapy has failed to affect change or where skills have plateaued (Bernhardt et al, 2003;Dagenais, Critz-Crosby, Fletcher, & McCutchen, 1994;Pantelemidou et al, 2003;Parsloe, 1998). There is evidence in the literature that EPG therapy can affect change in speech production skills more quickly than traditional therapy (Bernhardt et al, 2003;Dagenais et al, 1994;Fletcher et al, 1991;Parsloe, 1998). There is also some evidence that production skills can be maintained in the short-term (Crawford, 1995;Dagenais et al, 1994;Pantelemidou et al, 2003).…”

“…2 One arm evaluated the effects of visual-acoustic biofeedback intervention (see McAllister Byun & Hitchcock, 2012;McAllister Byun et al, 2016); another tested ultrasound biofeedback (e.g., McAllister Byun, Hitchcock, & Swartz, 2014;Preston et al, 2013;Preston et al, 2014); and a final arm examined electropalatographic (EPG) biofeedback (e.g., Fletcher, Dagenais, & Critz-Crosby, 1991;Hitchcock et al, in press). Four participants with residual /r/ misarticulation were enrolled in each leg of the study.…”
