Teaching current tests on surge arresters to undergraduate students using MATLAB–SIMULINK

Abstract: Surge arresters constitute an indispensable aid to insulation coordination in power systems and they are the primary protection against different types of overvoltages (lightning or switching). They are generally connected in parallel with the equipment to be protected to divert the surge currents. The paper presents an approach to teaching high-voltage laboratory using specially designed exercises that can be done using MATLAB R2007. This paper presents a MATLAB-based technology to simulate residual voltage t… Show more

“…Therefore, extraction of resistive component from total measured leakage current is very important to get the correct power loss. In this article, Current Orthogonality Method (COM), which is accurate and robust method to the harmonic voltage, has been used for resistive leakage current extraction . Based on experimental measuring, power loss has been obtained from extracted resistive component and applied voltage for one cycle according to the equation (1).…”

“…Nevertheless, the variation of time to crest and also amplitude of voltage and current impulses can be changed V – I characteristic. Temporary and long duration over‐voltages, switching, lightning, and steep current impulses are the examples of slow and fast front wave with different time to crest from several millisecond to 1 μs . In order to obtain V – I characteristic in high current region, 120 kJ—1.2 MV Marx generator has been used to product impulse current with different time to crest and amplitude.…”

“…It means that the evolution of the learning process has created the need to use additional academic tools that are linked with the state of the art of technology. The creation and use of a different kind of software in all areas of knowledge [8][9][10][11][12][13][14] has been a solution to this problem. The new generation of students was born in a digital era [15] where computers dominate over the books.…”

“…Ramos et al presented an e‐assessment of MATLAB assignments in Moodle (i.e., an open‐source community‐based tools for learning, https://moodle.org), with an application to programming course for engineers. Different studies concerning with the teaching–learning process in Engineering using MATLAB or MATLAB‐Simulink can be found in a literature survey (, among others). Soria‐Olivas et al described an introductory course to MATLAB for a heterogeneous group of university students; they pointed out that students attending that course discovered that a tool employed in their own field, could also be successfully applied to other fields.…”
