Teaching Digital Pathology: The International School of Digital Pathology and Proposed Syllabus

Abstract: Digital pathology is an interdisciplinary field where competency in pathology, laboratory techniques, informatics, computer science, information systems, engineering, and even biology converge. This implies that teaching students about digital pathology requires coverage, expertise, and hands-on experience in all these disciplines. With this in mind, a syllabus was developed for a digital pathology summer school aimed at professionals in the aforementioned fields, as well as trainees and doctoral students. The… Show more

“…Similarly the College of American Pathologists guidance document9 states that ‘Although it is important that users be trained to use this technology, the personnel required for WSI and how they should be trained are outside of the scope of this document’. There is minimal published literature on the topic of training programmes for histopathologists in digital pathology in the diagnostic setting, which includes a single report on a digital pathology summer school held in Italy for which a syllabus on training was proposed 10…”

“…Digital microscopy has already proven to be a practical alternative to conventional microscopy in pathology education and has replaced traditional microscope laboratories in many medical and dental schools. [1331323334] It has also been used to provide a large number of interesting cases over the internet. [35363738] The potential advantages of digital microscopy include the ability to store and distribute cases, integrate the scans with the electronic medical records for review, disseminate imaging studies, and facilitate second opinion consults by pathologists inside or outside the hospital system anywhere in the world.…”

“…[1234567] In the near future, pathology graduates are likely to practice in an environment that leverages digital pathology systems and robotics to improve efficiency, reduce cost, and potentially improve the quality of medical care. [24568910111213141516] Recently, digital pathology vendors such as Leica-Aperio, Philips, and Roche-Ventana have incorporated a common Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine (DICOM) standard file format and network protocol into their products. [4171819] The use of a common DICOM standard can facilitate the wide distribution and viewing of whole-slide imaging (WSI) prepared with different systems and is likely to stimulate the adoption of digital pathology systems for routine surgical pathology work in an increasing number of hospitals and other pathology practices.…”

“…On the other hand, proper digital pathology usage requires knowledge about it. Thus it has to become part of the curriculum for Pathology residents and other involved professions, like laboratory technicians, biology and computer scientists, and IT managers 71 .…”
