Teaching Kinetics and Equilibrium Topics Using Interlocking Building Bricks in Hands-on Activities

Abstract: Two in-class interlocking building brick-based activities were used to engage students in class and help improve student performance on chemical kinetics and equilibrium questions. In the kinetics activity, a pseudo-first-order bimolecular reaction is modeled with different numbers of colored bricks. In the equilibrium activity, the relationship between the rates of forward and reverse reactions and equilibrium amounts is demonstrated with different numbers of assemblers and disassemblers. A second part of thi… Show more

“…The solidified mixture is then pressed into interlock brick molds placed on a base, labeled accordingly, and left to dry for approximately 28 days. This methodology, as outlined by the researchers [9,[19][20] ensures the creation of interlocking bricks with robust structural integrity and dimensional stability. The study's focus on material composition and drying time, as well as the utilization of hydraulic machinery, highlights the meticulous approach taken in producing these innovative bricks, offering insights into the practical aspects of interlock brick manufacturing.…”

“…The interlocking toy brick chemistry demonstration outlined here was the second of several PERCEIVE (Preparing Engaging Real-time Chemical Education Interactive and Visual Examples) demonstrations employed while the lecturer bridged chemistry topics with healthcare practices, and introduced the Fall 2022 semester of a Chemistry for Health Professions course, in which BSN students assembled and worked a chemistry for health professions lecture demonstration. Interlocking toy bricks (or building bricks: LEGO) have been useful for other chemical education topics, such as transcribing ionic compound formulas, kinetics and equilibrium, , polymers, and green chemistry . With considerations for accessibility, the use of interlocking toy bricks offers a tactile (i.e., manipulative) learning experience for vision impaired students in a chemical education learning environment .…”
