Teaching romantic competence skills to emerging adults: A relationship education workshop

Abstract: Romantic relationships are a central component of life and are linked to well‐being, making adaptive functioning critical. Yet, there are few theory‐driven, systematic efforts to prepare young people to function skillfully. This study reports the results of a randomized controlled trial of a two‐session relationship education program based on Davila and colleagues' construct of romantic competence. Participants were 154 (68 relationship education, 86 waitlist) emerging adult college students. They completed qu… Show more

“…Future studies should focus on the pathways through which dating stressors are associated with mental health symptoms to provide clinicians with useful intervention targets. Further, the mental health correlates of dating stressors support continued empirical attention to relationship skills interventions that are focused on individuals (e.g., Davila et al, 2021), which could help people navigate dating stressors more effectively by teaching techniques for insight-building and emotion regulation that could allow for effective coping with ambiguity, uncertainty, and rejection when dating.…”

“…Perhaps social and emotional learning (SEL) programs, which target skills and behaviors to manage daily personal and social challenges, would be effective in this regard (Greenberg et al, 2017). Other programs that specifically target healthy young adult romantic relationships include content focused on connecting with romantic partners and understanding attachment patterns, and they often explicitly address the role of love in romantic relationships as necessary but not sufficient (Davila et al, 2021). These topics are not included in substance misuse prevention programming and may explain the lack of effects on love and connectedness.…”
