Tear Toughness Evaluation of a Permanent Mold Cast A356 Aluminum Alloy Using a Small-size Specimen

Abstract: Tear toughness evaluation of a permanent mold cast A356 aluminum alloy was carried out by using two kinds of specimen with different size. One was equivalent to the specimen size designated in ASTM B871. The other one was about 30% as large as that of standard one in volume. Unit energies for tear fracture were obtained from load-displacement curves, and their specimen size, thickness and microstructure dependency were examined. Unit crack initiation energy (UEi) increased with increase in specimen thickness. … Show more

“…Specifically, plate-like Mg 2 Si in lamella AlMg 2 Si eutectic structure changed to globular Mg 2 Si at high cooling rates over about 1000 K/s. No morphological change was observed for Al 6 Mn particles. Al-13%Mg 2 Si pseudobinary alloy was also fabricated and the spheroidizing of Mg 2 Si phase at the high cooling rate was confirmed.…”

“…In this case, the effect of metallurgical microstructure is masked even though the refined microstructure is beneficial for increase in ductility. In contrast, a series of previous works by Kumai et al [2][3][4][6][7][8][9] found that the loaddisplacement curve obtained by the tear test using a notched specimen shows good reproducibility even if casting defects are included in the specimen. In addition, they reported that the shape of load-displacement curve is quite sensitive to the microstructural change of the specimen.…”
