Technetium-99m Sestamibi Scintimammography Complements Mammography in the Detection of Breast Cancer

Abstract: Mammography remains the technique of choice for the detection of early breast cancer. The sensitivity of mammography is 85%, but is decreased in patients with dense breasts. Sestamibi scintimammography (SCM) has been suggested as an adjunctive modality to improve the detection of breast cancer. We conducted a study to determine the impact of SCM in patient management. A prospective study was conducted in 95 patients presenting with palpable masses and/or abnormal mammography scheduled for biopsy. Injection of … Show more

“…Scintimammography by sestamibi has been used as a method for the detection of breast cancer [2]. Nevertheless, false-positive results had been reported due to fibroadenoma, fibrocystic disease, focal atypical hyperplasia, granuloma, papilloma, breast involution, sclerosing adenosis, hematoma, focal inflammatory reaction (scarring, mastitis, and foreign mass reaction), benign angiomyoepithelioma, gynecomastia, pitfalls of interpretation, and even in the normal breast tissue [3][4][5][6][7].…”

“…It has been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration as an adjunct to mammography in the detection of breast cancer. Compared to conventional mammography, 99m Tc sestamibi imaging has superior utility in patients with large amounts of glandular tissue and dense breasts [9][10][11]. 99m Tc sestamibi is a lipophilic monocationic radiotracer that accumulates predominantly within the mitochondria and cytoplasm of cells on the basis electrical potentials generated across membrane bilayers.…”

“…99m-Tc sestamibi scintimammography has been previously described as method for detecting breast cancer and nodal metastases. 2,3 There have been numerous reports of non-cardiac findings with myocardial perfusion imaging. These include focal uptake in the breast on myocardial perfusion imaging studies as a marker for breast carcinoma in 24% of cases with non-cardiac findings in one study.…”
