Technical and Environmental Analysis of Parabolic Trough Concentrating Solar Power (CSP) Technologies

Abstract: With over 100 commercial projects in operation or under construction worldwide, concentrating solar power (CSP) has the potential to play a key role in the mass production of power. Despite the enormous potential, this technology suffers from a number of weaknesses that are related to the intermittency and variable nature of the solar resource, which results in reduced capacity factors and operation flexibility. The incorporation of energy backup systems provides a solution to these drawbacks, allowing CSP to … Show more

“…To this purpose, a research project titled HYSOL (funded by the European Commission under its 7th Framework Program) is developing and testing a new hybrid configuration for CSP plants intended to achieve higher energy efficiency, reduced economic costs, and improved firmness and dispatchability in the generation of power on demand. Furthermore, HYSOL plants may operate using biomethane as auxiliary fuel, resulting in the generation of 100% renewable electricity [4,5].…”

“…The HYSOL technology achieves a higher energy efficiency than conventional CSP plants deployed in Spain. Further details about the HYSOL technology and its potential in the Spanish energy system may be found in San Miguel et al 2015and Servert et al (2015). The function of the HYSOL system is, hence, to supply electricity to the grid in a dispatchable manner.…”
