Technical and personal remembrances of David A. Shirley in studies of surface magnetism, photoelectron spectroscopy, EUV lithography, and hydrogen storage

Abstract: This article describes the influence of Professor David A. Shirley on the research science of one of his Ph.D. students in the diverse areas of surface magnetism, x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), spin-resolved XPS (SRXPS), extreme ultraviolet (EUV) lithography, and hydrogen storage materials science. Examples are given from the author's work on Cr(001) surface magnetism, XPS, and SRXPS studies of multiplet-splitting in core-level photoemission from Fe.
