Technical aspects of SAW gas sensors application in environmental measurements

Abstract: The development of semiconductor technology and computer methods allows for the improvements in air pollutions measurement techniques. Besides the traditional techniques of air pollution measurement such as chromatography or dynamic olfactometry, the electronic nose (EN) gains increasing attention in this area. EN is a device which imitates the human olfactory sense. The main component of the device is an array of many nonspecific gas sensors. In this article, the most frequently used types of gas sensors in s… Show more

“…Despite the low sample volume and rapid resolution time, considering an RBC count of 5 × 10 6 /µL of blood, the detection limit (100,000 parasites/µL of blood) is not competitive with microscopy and RDTs yet, nor do the authors specify whether this sensor operates based on hemozoin detection. Nevertheless, the sensitivity and specificity of SAW sensors might be improved by their coating with absorptive materials [ 96 ]. Despite being thermo-stable and not requiring high energy for operation, the durability of these sensors might be a challenge [ 96 ].…”

“…Table 1 delineates the materials incorporated into the gas-sensing devices, as described in Section 3 of this work, and provides the disadvantages that more commonly occur according to the configuration or mechanisms of action of any of the described gas sensors. [71,[108][109][110][111]140] Irrespective of this feasibility afforded to monitor the germinating GHGs with operational, research-grade instrumentation, still, quantification requirements must be carefully construed. For instance, data records should be exceptionally precise, durable, and span multiple decades for the long-term resolution of annual mean GHG gradients.…”
