Technical efficiency analysis for the Iranian fishery in the Persian Gulf

Abstract: There are many fish landing areas in southern Iran, distributed all along the coastline, and despite gradually increasing effort, the total catch has fluctuated in recent years. This study examines the technical efficiency of the fishing industry, and identifies factors that could be causing inefficiency. A stochastic production function among fishery vessels is estimated. Technical efficiency measures the ability of firms to maximize output using a given set of inputs and technologies. The results indicate th… Show more

“…Moreover, a negative correlation is detected between TE and the presence of the owner on board the vessel, expressed as the ratio of unpaid labour to total labour costs. This is somehow contradictory with the results of previous studies (e.g., [14,30]) where owner-operated vessels are considered more efficient than others.…”

“…According to Table 2, the majority of the vessels (63%) operates under increasing returns to scale, while 15% operates under decreasing returns to scale. This is a common finding in the relevant literature (e.g., [9,29,30]) and indicates that the majority of vessels can be more productive if they increase their input usage (to optimally operate under constant returns to scale). Tables 3-5 provide the results of the Spearman correlation and Mann-Whitney tests between the efficiency scores and several socio-economic variables.…”

“…In his path-breaking and belatedly influential paper, Farrell (1957) is credited for pioneering the measurement of productive efficiency and recognizing the importance of measuring the extent to which outputs can be increased through higher efficiency and without using additional inputs (Esmaeili, 2006 andLovell, 1984). Farrell's (1957) efficiency analysis has proposed that the total economic efficiency of a firm consists of technical efficiency and allocative efficiency.…”

“…The length-weight relations of some species recently have been studied in Iran and other localities (Barrientos-Medina et al, 2013;Mousavi-Sabet et al, 2013;Moutopoulos et al, 2013;Qiang et al, 2013). The available information about fish population biology including length-weight relationship in Iran is restricted to some information on commercially important marine and freshwater fishes (Hosseini, 2002;Shokri et al, 2005;Esmaeili, 2006;Raeisi et al, 2011;Mousavi-Sabet et al, 2013). This study presents information about length-weight and length-length relationships, relative condition factor and Fulton's condition factor for H. leucisculus in Sefidroud River, in southwestern of the Caspian Sea basin.…”
